Political PR Advice

A little free advice for the next politician that finds him/her self frantically trying to recall a tweet/nude photo or inappropriate e-mail:  Read the book “Feeding Frenzy.”  Sabato delivers what Visa would deem a “Priceless” lesson…

In short, if you start to feed the piranhas in the press, they will continue to feed.

In my opinion, there are only two ways to handle a politically charged media disaster:

1) Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth immediately…or

2) take a vow of silence.

I’m an advocate for both–yet,  in a perfect world, #2 is my option of choice for the simple fact that blood in the water, regardless of how righteous, is still blood in the water.  No good will ever come from airing dirty laundry.  In the age of the 24 hour news cycle, scandal is the media’s bread and butter.

If #2 isn’t a singular option, #1 should always be followed by #2.  Rep. Weiner missed that tweet.  From a PR perspective, he’s been his own worst enemy from day one.  His handlers should have told him that battles are won by getting in and getting out before your enemy knows you’ve been there…not after a thirty minute press conference.
