R.I.P. Uncle Jesse

You made a mean omelet in your day.

I started this post over the weekend and out of sheer laziness left it hanging until now. My apologies.
In the world of Kevin Bacon, the good Senator from North Carolina was but a degree removed from my life. His nephew lived across the hall from me in college and his brother adopted my cat, Mouse, when dirty kitty litter boxes became more than I could handle. Long before I roamed the halls of the Russell Building and hitched a ride with him on the Senators Only elevator…

Uncle Jesse, as I knew him, was a gentleman before he was a politician…and a gentleman after. May he rest in peace knowing he fought the good fight.

How Very Noble

There’s an article in the online version of Time magazine today about a secret plot to blow up the Edwards campaign (thanks to those nasty little rumors of an affair) had victory appeared certain.

First of all, who cares? John Edwards hasn’t been a Presidential candidate for months.

But really…how stupid do they think we are? In the name of the Democratic Party they couldn’t support a man who had been unfaithful…(nevermind JFK and Clinton) No, they couldn’t support him as the nominee…but they could continue to collect a paycheck until that possibility played out.

Don’t you just love people with principles?

Quote of the Day

Referencing Arlen Specter’s exit from the Republican Party.

“My mother used to say “If you’re getting run out of town, get in front of the crowd and make it look like a parade.”" L.M.P.

Matter of Opinion

Byron York had an interesting opinion piece in the Washington Examiner this morning about the anger of the Left. It was provoked, in part, by comments actress/comedienne Janeane Garofalo made about the tea parties during an appearance on Keith Olbermann’s show. I have to admit, watching Keith Olbermann makes my body twitch….but that’s a different matter altogether…here’s Jeneane’s quote:

“Let’s be very honest about what this is about,” Garofalo said. “It’s not about bashing Democrats. It’s not about taxes. …This is about hating a black man in the White House.”

Is it any wonder the Right and the Left don’t get along? I was born and raised in the South and I’d be willing to bet the only problem most Southerners have with a black man occupying the White House is the ease with which we’re charged with racism when we disagree with his policies.

When the Truth Hurts

I read a great a column this morning in the Washington Examiner: “Don’t Blame Obama for $1 Trillion deficit, just because he voted for it.”

I’ve always been amazed at the ease with which Democrats spin a story. Obama, in one his first Presidential appearances, apologetically told the American people he “inherited” the mess we now find ourselves in. Wash those hands while the public still believes you, Mr. President! One day a light bulb is going to go off and they’ll remember that lesson from 9th grade Civics class. You know, the one that explains how a bill becomes a law.

What I Think

I’ve gotten a couple of e-mails today pulsing my reaction to yesterday’s election. I suppose I’m flattered to be asked–as if I have some sort of magical insight to these things. When really I know just as much and just as little as everyone else….

The results weren’t surprising to me. I didn’t wake up this morning feeling like I’d just been slapped in the head with a V-8. Barring something completely out of the ordinary, I could have told you this was going to happen the night McCain accepted the nomination at the Republican Convention–if not before.

There is no one person to point a finger at–and no one person to blame. Pundits will say McCain was too stiff and Palin was too folksy–but at the end of the day there was no better team to try to push the boat off the sandbar.

It’s all very simple. If you buy a used car from a man who offers you an extended warranty and then never honors it, you’re not inclined to buy a used car from that man again.

The Republican Party needs to take a good long look in the mirror–not the one that shows Presidents and Kings–but the one that reminds them of where they came from and what they stand for.

If there’s ever been an example of “in the right place at the right time” Barack Obama is it. The real story of this election isn’t race or history…it’s the opportunity taken by a talented salesman. Let’s just hope America doesn’t wake up to a case of buyers remorse.

Or let’s just hope Republicans can get their boat back in the water before they do.

Hokey Pokey

Altogether now! “Put your right foot in…”

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters before the announced agreement that Clinton was not carrying any message from Obama. Gibbs added the former president last spoke with Obama during a White House visit in March. He described Clinton’s trip as a “solely private mission to secure the release of two Americans.”

“Put your right foot out…”

Speaking to reporters earlier, press secretary Robert Gibbs had said the former president would brief Obama’s national security team at some point on what transpired during his high-level meeting with Kim as a private envoy representing the United States.

“You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around…”
Semantics, my dear, semantics.

Advancing a Bad Agenda

Georgetown University hid a religious inscription representing the name of Jesus during President Obama’s address there Tuesday, FOXNews.com has confirmed, because White House staff asked the school to cover up all religious symbols and signs while the president was on stage.

I’ve done advance work and I understand the importance of a backdrop…but this was just plain stupid. In the words of Winnie the Pooh, “Think, think, think.” The measure of a man isn’t how he looks on camera…

All I Have To Say…

…is kudos to my girl Peggy Noonan for her latest column in the Wall Street Journal.

I think this might just be the quote of the day:

The Democrats should not be attacking, they should be attempting to persuade, to argue for their case. After all, they have the big mic. Which is what the presidency is, the big mic.
All in favor of pulling the plug, say “Aye!”
